Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan today received the delegation of World Council of Churches (WCC) Executive Committee delegation headed by Secretary General Dr. Olav Tveit, Armenian President Press Service reports. The meeting was also attended by Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians, under whose chairmanship the session of the WCC Committee was kicked off in Armenia’s Etchmiadzin city.
The session is held in Armenia on occasion of the Armenian Genocide Centennial and co-presidency of the Catholicos in the WCC.
Serzh Sargsyan underscored the importance of the Council, which has always been attentive to the Armenians, having recognized the Armenian Genocide back in 1983. The president highly appreciated Olav Tveit’s visit to Armenia in April with the view of attending the Armenia Genocide Centenary Commemoration Ceremony. He stressed that the Armenian people have always felt support in the question of the Armenian Genocide recognition and condemnation, this finding another expression in the mass served by Pope Francis in memory of the innocent victims of the Genocide.
Sargsyan also stressed the importance of the Council’s mission of propagating tolerance and said that Armenia stands for dialogue and tolerance, as well as peaceful solution of issues. Armenia follows this principle in normalizing the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, he said.
