The Mekhitarist Congregation of San Lazzaro, Venice has celebrated its 300th anniversary in a special liturgy attended by high-ranking guests from Armenia and many other countries abroad.
The participants had a unique chance to enjoy the sounds of the Armenian duduk (by Aram Ipekjyan).
Armenian Ambassador to the Holy See of Vatican Mikael Minasyan, Minister of Diaspora Hranush Hakobyan, Ambassador to Italy Victoria Baghdasaryan were among the invitees.
The St Mark’s Basilica of Venice later hosted an evening Mass to honor the remarkable anniversary marking the cultural center’s three-century presence on the island. Before the ceremony, Patriarch of Venice Francesco Moraglia recalled the entire history of the Congregation.
“I am thankful to God for endowing me with the unique opportunity to enjoy these sacred moments. We must be grateful to the Mekhitarist Congregation for preserving the Armenian culture but also helping us preserve our own culture too. And today we once again have the special chance to reveal the human being’s essence,” he said.
A special exhibition to introduce the Armenian Church’s history was held as part of the jubilee events.
Earlier, President Serzh Sargsyan issued his congratulations on the anniversary, highlighting the Congregation’s unique role in the preservation of the Armenian identity and culture.
